Breaking down donations within the capital, fundraisers in West London raised the most, averaging £1,260 while those in the City of London came bottom of the capital rankings, raising £493.
Grant Bather, spokesman at Virgin Money Giving, said: “Fundraising is essential to many charities’ existence and it is good to see that so many people are committed to raising money.
“London, with over six million people, and as host city to the largest annual fundraising event in the world – the Virgin London Marathon – understandably fared well but other large cities such as Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds saw average money raised in the £200-£400 bracket.
“However much fundraisers manage to raise, by using Virgin Money Giving, more money can reach the charity.”
Virgin Money Giving has over 30,000 fundraisers registered, and has seen over £17 million raised since its launch in October 2009.

I’m going to have to be a massive nerd here, but how significant is this?
If VMG pages are evenly distributed across the country, then that makes sense, but areas with fewer pages will just need one page that’s massive, or small, to alter things. Also, how does this measure up to levels of poverty? London, being a more affluent area, isn’t really a surprise.
Wouldn’t a better measure be to see how many people are fundraising, not on who’s got the richest mates?
Were multiple pages for one fundraiser combined? If you have one fundraiser who’s had five pages each raising £500, he will have done a lot more than one person with one page raising £1,500.
Sorry to go on, but I can get a bit soap boxey when it comes to stories with statistics in.
At least put your working in the press release link so people can see your methods and get more info, if they wish.
Massive nerd strike over.
Many thanks for your comment
Virgin Money Giving has over 30,000 fundraisers registered, raising money for over 1,600 charities. As part of the study into the most giving town, we looked at where the fundraisers were, by area, and combined this with how much was raised.
Events and donors are taking place or donating across the globe – so while fundraisers in West London raised the most, this is not to say that all of their donations were from people in West London. For example, not everyone who takes part in the London Marathon is from London.
Fundraisers were determined by fundraising account – so if they had 4 pages registered to 1 account they were viewed as one fundraiser.

Thanks Grant : )
Donations are potentially worldwide, but a lot of people will still be getting donations from friends and colleagues near where they live, even in this global village.
Good work on combining pages.
Can we get a follow up of numbers of pages by area? That would be interesting too!
Have a good weekend,
David
