Going the distance for the Freddie Farmer Foundation

This weekend Freddie Farmer and his brother Oliver are raising money for the Freddie Farmer Foundation. Freddie has cerebral palsy and he’s hoping to raise £250,000. He explains his event:

On Sunday 11 March my brother Oliver (age 10) and I, Freddie (age 7) are joining the staff at Sainsbury’s Eltham in a 2.8 mile walk to Sainsbury’s in Chislehurst to raise money for the Freddie Farmer Foundation.

The Foundation was founded in 2011 in my name by my family to raise £250,000 to set-up a specialised physiotherapy centre in SE England for children & young people with cerebral palsy (like me) or who have serious mobility problems.

Sainsbury’s in Eltham have adopted us as their ‘charity of the year’ and have held numerous fundraising events supporting our cause. Paralympic gold medal winner Danny Crates will start us off.

“I plan on completing the whole distance (2.8 miles) in my electric wheelchair – a massive challenge for me as I have limited movement in my upper body but I am determined & confident I will make the finishing line.”

Oliver, on the other hand will no doubt try & run the whole distance as fast as he can – he is very fast.

Vikki’s hearts in it for BHF bike ride.

British Heart FoundationAt the end of May Vikki and her team will be raising money for the British Heart foundation by completing their inaugural London-Brighton night ride at the end of May.

Below is Vikki’s story;

‘My friends are supporting me in my madness!  I have Marfan syndrome (a connective tissue disorder) and this has led to me having both my mitral and my aortic valves replaced with mechanical ones … now I tick in double time!

‘I had my mitral valve replaced in November 2007 and my aortic valve replaced in September 2011.

To give me something to aim for as I get back to fitness I decided to sign up for the London-Brighton night ride at the end of May 2012.  My friends,
all 14 of them, decided that the best way to encourage me in this was to join in with me!! Others are acting as support crew – I am blessed indeed
in my friends.

‘Why did I choose this charity to raise funds for? Well I can testify at first hand the massive improvements in care for those who have open heart
surgery in the last 4 years and want to show my appreciation to the British Heart Foundation for their research and education. Long may it continue.

‘We will make updates through the blog on our fundraising page as we all prepare … some of the team are having to purchase bikes, lycra and fluro
lights. And all of us are having to get in cycling practice!  I am starting from scratch in my training … although I assure you it is many years
since I cycled through a cabbage patch.’

Beloved Memory Inspires Second Marathon Run for Dan

Dan Runs the Virgin London MarathonOn 22 April 2012, Dan Wittred will combat the 26 miles of the London Marathon for the second time in four years. Dan will be running in memory of his Dad, Nigel, who will have passed away almost two years to the day.

Following the loss of 55 year old Nigel to an unexpected brain aneurysm in 2010, Dan wanted to show his support to other families who may find themselves in a similar situation by raising money for the charity Headway.

Pulling out all the stops, Dan has already reached his fundraising target of £1,500 three months ahead of event day and is set on sending his total even further through the roof.

If that isn’t enough, Dan has hired himself a personal trainer and put himself on a four-month ban from alcohol in the hope this will enable him to complete the race in less than four hours.

Dan said “After struggling through the 2008 Marathon with very little training, I swore I would never put myself through the torturous pain again.  That said; the unforeseen loss of my Dad soon changed my mind.

The training has been tough, but I know it will be worth it for the great atmosphere on the day.  I wanted to turn something very negative into something positive, so here I am raising money for a cause I really believe in.”

Headway- the brain injury association is a charity set up to help offer support and services to those affected by brain injury as well as their families and carers.  Headway offers a wide range of services both locally and nationally, including rehabilitation programmes, carer support, social re-integration, community outreach and respite care.

Launching a YouTube video to inspire people to sponsor him, and with the support of a charity event hosted by his girlfriend’s Mum, Dan has gone above and beyond raising the money he intended to and hopes to go even further.

If you would like to sponsor Dan ahead of the biggest fundraising event of the year, please go to: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/DanWittred

Dallaglio Flintoff Cycle Slam 2012

Between 23 April  and 18 May 2012 England rugby international and World Cup winner Lawrence Dallaglio and cricketing legend Andrew ‘Freddie’ Flintoff will undertake the ride of their lives.

Our friends at Virgin Media are the official sponsor of the challenge. Virgin Media will be providing Freddie, Lawrence, the core riders and support teams with top-of-the-range smartphones so that they can stay connected to home and their supporters as they tackle the changing weather and landscape. Virgin Balloon Flights 50 #firsttimes charity challenge

50 #firsttimes charity challenge

Could you do 50 things for the first time in five days? To celebrate the Virgin Social Marathon (more on that soon) Alex Ferguson is taking on an incredible #FirstTimes Charity Challenge.

Alex is aiming to do 50 First Times in five Days for Virgin Unite – Virgin’s not-for-profit foundation.

His challenge will start on Saturday, November 12th, building up to the Virgin Social Marathon on November 16th. It will include “physical challenges, mental tests, painful things, scary things, funny things and disgusting things”. Nice!

Alex wrote on Virgin Balloon Flights’ blog: “When was the last time you did something for the first time? It was probably just this morning. Was it cool, fun, interesting, surprising, scary, disgusting or totally unforgettable?

“Life is made up of first times and the first time is often the best. Life also tends to be more fun if you’re open to trying new things, even if they take you out of your usual comfort zone. I’ve recently become a dad for the first time – so this has opened up a whole new world of first times!”

On 18 June, friends and family of paramedic Lorna Lambden completed a 24-hour trek around the Isle of Wight, to raise money in her memory for the London Air Ambulance and RNLI Lifeboat Appeal.

27 year old Lorna passed away suddenly in December 2010, after accidentally overdosing on medication prescribed to help her with insomnia and subsequent dips in her energy levels.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is the charity that saves lives at sea. The RNLI’s volunteer lifeboat crew rescue an average of 22 people every day around the coasts and waterways of Britain and Ireland. From 235 lifeboat stations, they are well trained and equipped to put to sea in the most fearsome conditions when the call comes. RNLI lifeguards patrol more than 140 beaches in England and Wales.

Brother-in-laws Tackle Olympic Triathlon Distance

Triathlon

On July 31, brother-in-laws Rob Donaldson and Greg Manzie took part in the Virgin Active London triathlon to raise money for DeBRA and Diabetes UK – two charities which raise money for the conditions both men suffer from.

Rob has suffered from Epidermyolysis Bullosa (EB) since he was 20 years old and Greg has been a type 1 diabetic for the past 18 years. They both took part in the Olympic distance triathlon, which consisted of a 1500 metre swim, a cycle of 40 kilometres and a run of 10 kilometres.

Rob was raising money for DeBRA, a national charity working on behalf of individuals and families affected by Epidermyolysis Bullosa. It is a rare condition which causes the skin and internal body linings to blister and sheer at the slightest friction causing painful open wounds.

Rob says “EB means I have had to give up activities and cycling and running can also cause blisters for me, but other than that it does not really affect my day-to-day life. I am lucky that my symptoms are limited to occasional blisters on my hands and feet, others are not so lucky.”

Greg was fundraising for Diabetes UK, a charity for people with diabetes as well as their family, friends and carers. The mission of the charity is to improve the lives of people with the condition and work towards a future without diabetes. Diabetes is one of the largest patient organisations in Europe.
