Missed the ballot – there are still ways to enter the 2013 Virgin London Marathon

Although the public ballot for the 2013 Virgin London Marathon has now closed there are still plenty of ways to get a place.

If you have a particular cause you’re interested in running for contact the charity directly – they may have spaces. Each year charities are offered ‘bond’ places and in exchange for the place they’ll set you a minimum fundraising target for the charity.

Next year Age UK and YouthNet are the joint charity partners, but there are plenty of charities who have places.

If you deferred your place from this year, or your charity has already guaranteed your entry into the 2013 event you can put your fundraising page together now.

With the 2o13 Virgin London Marathon nearly a year away, there is plenty of time to tackle other races and distances. There are still places available in many events, and if you run for charity many f these will have lower fundraising targets such as the Run to the Beat Half Marathon in Greenwich.

Also, don’t forget to check back in October when places in the Virgin London Marathon are officially announced.

As soon as your place is confirmed don’t forget to put your fundraising page together, We’ve seen that the earlier you get your page set up, the more donations you’re likely to get from donors.

What to do if you have to defer your Virgin London Marathon

2012 Virgin London Marathon

We’ve had a couple of fundraisers ask us, so we thought it might be worth pulling together some information on what to do if the unthinkable happens – you have to withdraw from the 2012 Virgin London Marathon.

Deferring to next year’s marathon will be different depending on where you received your place from. You’ll find the full advice on what you have to do with your race place in the latest 2012 Virgin London Marathon News (on page 23), but here’s our quick guide on what to do if you’ve been raising money for charity.

  • Ballot place runners that haven’t deferred before need to complete this form (you have until 21 April) to arrange to move your place to next year’s race.
  • If you received your place from a charity, or through a partner/sponsor of the event you will need to check with them directly to see if your place can be deferred.

If you didn’t get your place from a charity, make sure they know you’re deferring to next year’s race.

Runners who can defer their place will receive an email link for the 2013 entry form by 1 June 2012. If you’ve not received an email by this date, then call the London Marathon team on 0207 902 0200. The closing date for completion of the online ill or injured form is 5pm 24 June 2012.

Once you know your place has been transferred to next year’s event there are a few things you should do with your fundraising page:

  1. Close your 2012 Virgin London Marathon page and open a new one for the 2013 event – this will help your charity know which event you’re fundraising for. Make sure you don’t close your account – just your 2012 Virgin London Marathon page.
  2. Update the ‘offline’ total on your new page to show the amount you had raised so far (include the Gift Aid amount).
  3. Add a note to the ‘my story’ area of your page to let your supporters know you’ve deferred, and that you’re still fundraising.
  4. It’s also a good idea to email all your donors to let them know that you’re not running this year.

Virgin London Marathon ballot entries confirmed

Runners accepted into the 2011 Virgin London Marathon have been urged to set up their fundraising pages early to help charities maximise donations.

Analysis from Virgin Money Giving the not-for-profit online fundraising website showed that fundraisers who set up their page between October and December last year raised, on average, £200 more than those that left it until the final few months.

Over 30,000 runners had their ballot places confirmed in early October and with less than six months to go until the 26.2 mile race participants have been urged to start fundraising.

The London Marathon is the largest annual fundraising even in the world and over the course of the sponsorship deal announced by Virgin Money, set to run until 2014, it is hoped that over £250 million will go to good causes.

Fundraisers who used Virgin Money Giving rather than any other fundraising website for their 2010 marathon fundraising helped contribute to charities receiving an extra £347,000.

The 2010 Virgin London Marathon raised £50.6 million for charity, with hopes to exceed this for the 2011 race.

Grant Bather, spokesman at Virgin Money Giving, said: “The London Marathon is an iconic event and the largest annual fundraising event in the world.

“With over 35,000 runners set to take to the capitals streets on 17 April 2011 there are high hopes that runners will be able to exceed last years total and raise even more for good causes.”

Oxfam has been chosen as the official charity of the 2011 Virgin London Marathon.

Virgin Money Giving, the not-for-profit online fundraising site was launched in 2009, following the sponsorship by Virgin, of the London Marathon. To date Virgin Money Giving has raised over £20 million, with over 32,000 fundraisers signed up and close to 2,000 charities.
