Majority of Marathon-ers do it for Charity

And Marathon runners who set targets raised 58% more than those who didn’t

Over 80% of runners who took part in the Virgin London Marathon raised money for charity, new analysis from not-for-profit online giving site virginmoneygiving.com shows.

Analysis of fundraising at the 2011 event revealed that 86% of those who took part in the race raised money for charity. These ranged from club runners and marathon veterans, to first-timers.

And those who set charity targets raised on average 58% more than those who didn’t publish a fundraising target, the research shows.

Analysis of fundraising at the 2011 event indicates the average amount raised for good causes by those who set a fundraising target was £1,328 excluding Gift Aid, compared with £842 excluding Gift Aid by those who did not.

Using Gift Aid also helped. On virginmoneygiving.com Gift Aid was reclaimed on 88% of all donations, and meant that the average fundraiser accrued £1,436 including Gift Aid.

The figures are contained in a report produced for charities by Virgin Money Giving in conjunction with the Virgin London Marathon, aimed at helping to maximise donations for the 2012 event.

Fundraising figures for the 2011 Marathon show that Virgin is well on course to hit its target of helping to raise £250 million for good causes through the London Marathon by 2015. Runners in the 2011 race raised £51.8 million for charity.

Fundraisers who used virginmoneygiving.com contributed £13.8 million to charity compared with £8.3 million in its first year of operation. 10,231 people used the service in 2011 compared with 6,246 in 2010.

Jo Barnett, executive director at Virgin Money Giving said: “Training for, and running a marathon is no easy feat and our research shows that the main driver for people taking part in the London Marathon is to raise funds for charity. It is great that so many runners see their involvement in the event as a way of encouraging people to donate to charity.

“Setting a target clearly pays off, even if fundraisers do not hit the target, as the 58% difference in average amounts raised demonstrates.

“Charities need all the money they can raise and it is great to see that the vast majority of runners, whatever their aim for the race, are committed to raising money for charity.

The report shows 2011Marathonrunners who set up their fundraising pages when their place was first confirmed in 2010 raised an average of £1,511, including Gift Aid compared with £1,374 for those who waited and started in 2011.

A total of 364,500 donations for theMarathonwere received through virginmoneygiving.com for the 2011 race – 70% higher than the 214,405 in 2010.

Through Virgin Money Giving, for every £10 donated, £12.15 will make its way to the good cause, assuming donors are eligible to sign up to give Gift Aid. Since its launch in October 2009 virginmoneygiving.com has raised close to £75 million.

24-Hour Trek in Memory of Lost Paramedic

On 18 June, friends and family of paramedic Lorna Lambden completed a 24-hour trek around the Isle of Wight, to raise money in her memory for the London Air Ambulance and RNLI Lifeboat Appeal.

27 year old Lorna passed away suddenly in December 2010, after accidentally overdosing on medication prescribed to help her with insomnia and subsequent dips in her energy levels.

Known for her love of challenges, Lorna completed both the London Marathon and a trek to Everest Base Camp, which is why Fergus Boden, Roy Lambden, Sandy Lambden, Heather Lambden, Will McDonald, Jenny Barber- Lomax, Richard Gamble, Alasdair Boden and Seb Clover all chose to undertake the 100km walking challenge.

Nicknamed Doogle by her family, the Lambden’s decided to name the challenge ‘Doogle’s Dawdle’, which they proudly completed- even managing to raise a glass at the end in Lorna’s memory!

London’s Air Ambulance is London’s only helicopter emergency medical service, which provides pre-hospital care to victims of serious injury throughout London- serving the 10 million people who live, work and commute within the M25.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is the charity that saves lives at sea. The RNLI’s volunteer lifeboat crew rescue an average of 22 people every day around the coasts and waterways of Britain and Ireland. From 235 lifeboat stations, they are well trained and equipped to put to sea in the most fearsome conditions when the call comes. RNLI lifeguards patrol more than 140 beaches in England and Wales.

Georgie’s Story

After my sister Ollie was diagnosed with cancer when she was seventeen, I decided to run the marathon to raise money for CLIC Sargent.

My sister has been so brave since she got the biopsy results which said she had Ewing’s Sarcoma which is a type of bone cancer.

She went through 14 chemotherapy treatments last year. Her final chemotherapy session was in November last year and in December she received the wonderful news that the cancer was gone.

Since then Ollie’s hair has begun to grow back, she’s gone back to school full time and picked up on her AS Levels. Her three month scans in March have come back as all clear and as a family we feel like we can begin to put the last 12 months behind us. Ollie is a year behind all her friends though who are about to go off to university.

Ollie has been recording her experiences in an online video diary in the last 5 months both during her treatment and since she has finished. She hopes that this will help other teenagers with cancer through their own experiences. She’s calling it a webumentary and you can see her story at www.clicsargent.org.uk/olliesstory

I’ve really been inspired by how strong she has been throughout her cancer journey and how much CLIC Sargent have helped her. Running the marathon for them seemed like something big that I could do.

I’m actually running it with my boyfriend and we’ve been going for training runs round Abersoch in North Wales. Our route includes hills and beaches so I’m hoping the training will be hard enough to prepare us for the big day.

We usually chat when we’re out for a run but I’m not sure we’ll be doing that by the 26th mile!
