On 28 May 2014 it’s World Hunger Day. This is a day of celebration for those women, children and men that have managed to lift themselves out of extreme hunger and poverty.
The number of people living in extreme poverty has been cut in half from 43% in 1990 to less than 20% today. This is a fantastic achievement, but there’s still a long way to go! Millions of people still live on less than $1.25 (£1) a day. Ending hunger and poverty remains a critical part of the international agenda and the Hunger Project’s work “To end hunger and poverty by pioneering sustainable, grassroots, women-centred strategies and advocating for their widespread adoption in countries throughout the world.”
As part of World Hunger Day, The Hunger Project and Channel 4 have set up a challenge that everyone can take part in to help raise money – Come Dine Below the Line. The task is to arrange a dinner party or BBQ over the Summer below the poverty line – only 33 pence per guest can be spent on food. You can set up your Virgin Money Giving Event Page here or start fundraising for The Hunger Project in a different way.
And don’t forget, this Wednesday it’s also the second 555 Giveaway. If you get a donation less than £100 through PayPal, it could be doubled.
