Today, two days before the 2016 Virgin Money London Marathon, we are proud to bring you a guest blog from Shonagh Byrne who will be starting on the day alongisde her husband Danny, fundraising in memory of her daughter Evie.
“Throughout countless rounds of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, blood and platelet transfusions, biopsies and operations Evie continued to smile, laugh and have fun on the ward. She lost her hair, she lost her kidney and a part of her lung, but she never lost her sense of adventure. Unfortunately after almost a year of treatment Evie passed away, peacefully, with her big brother Alfie and us by her side. There was nothing more the professors, doctors, radiographers, nurses or anyone could do for her. Evie was 26 months old.”
It’s Good 2 Give
“A particular fond memory we have [of It’s Good 2 Give] is when Evie was stranded in hospital with chicken pox over Christmas. The charity provided a fantastic buffet Christmas lunch for us all to enjoy on Christmas day. They also provided vouchers for us to have our ironing done, something a million miles away from your priorities but still needs doing. We attended countless workshops and activity days with the charity, Evie and Alfie got to try their hand at a number of arts and crafts, planting, baking, fruit picking amongst them. Alfie was always included and never left out. The charity help out with many more requests for practical support.”
“After Evie passed away we wanted a focus, something for us to work towards in Evie’s memory, on her behalf. Shonagh has became a Parent ambassador for the charity, and at 6 years old Alfie is the charities Youngest Ambassador within their Young Ambassador program. He loves helping out at events, selling raffle tickets being his specialty.”
“In April we will take on our biggest challenge to date; the London Marathon. Between training 3 times a week we have been fundraising hard, holding a Fashion Show, a quiz night and a 5K family fun run to mark Evie’s 5th birthday on the 9th of March.”
“To be able to help raise money for this amazing charity means the world to us. Without Evie we would not have known much about it. Although we wish Evie could be here to experience the retreat and the after care from the charity, she has shaped and inspired us to continue to help and support families with children who have cancer and bereaved famiies like ourselves.
So now, we will run a mile for every month Evie lived, 26 miles for 26 months and we know she will be with us every step of the way.”
