In celebration of the millionth runner finishing the Virgin Money London Marathon this year, we teamed up with MasterCard to give one Virgin Money Giving fundraiser the chance to win a £25,000 donation for their charity.
Meet the charity who won this donation and find out how they are spending it.
It has now been two weeks since the donation was made to Tim’s page, and we caught up with Starlight to find out how this donation is being spent.
Alex Abbott from the Starlight fundraising team told us:
“We are thrilled to receive this grant from MasterCard and Virgin Money Giving. We very much appreciate their generosity and this kind donation of £25,000 will help Starlight build 8 new Starlight Fun Centres and provide entertainment for an estimated 3,500 sick children in hospital.”
Starlight’s research has highlighted the importance of play and entertainment for children who are undergoing treatment in hospitals, both in preparing children for what is going to happen and in providing ways for them to work through anxieties and fears and deal with their experiences in hospital.
Starlight Fun Centres are a core component of Starlight’s Hospital Entertainment Programme. Each Starlight Fun Centre comes loaded with activities for children to use and provide non-stop entertainment and distraction for children fighting illness and recovering from injury in children’s hospital wards and hospices across the UK.
Johanna Battram, mum to Harry, a Starlight Wish child, says:
“Starlight has always been there for us. Throughout all of Harry’s treatment we’ve used the life changing services that Starlight provides in hospitals from their Distraction Boxes to their Fun Centres. The Fun Centres really are saviours and have turned many long days into hours rather than the other way around!”
Eimear Creaven, the Senior Vice President of MasterCard UK and Ireland said
“MasterCard is delighted to extend our congratulations to Tim, for successfully completing the London Marathon and for all his fantastic fundraising efforts! We are thrilled to reward Tim with an additional £25,000 and are so pleased that this donation is going to such a worthwhile cause. Congratulations from all the team at MasterCard.”
How you can help
You can help Starlight continue to provide these life changing experiences for ill children in the UK by making a donation or, like Tim, you could choose to take on your own fundraising challenge in support of this charity.
