Today’s #fundraiserfriday stars, Ryan, Ashley and Andrew cycled a phenomenal 600 miles from York to Berlin all in aid of Cancer Research UK. Ryan was delighted to tell us that they “completed the 600 miles without any serious issues and arrived in as planned Berlin last Friday in a searing 34 degree heat”.
A personal cause
Passionate about fundraising for causes close to their heart, the journey that lead to their decision to take on the 600 mile ride for Cancer Research UK initially started two years ago when Ashley’s dad sadly passed away. Having all lost loved ones, Ryan says “We committed to each other that we would do something every year to honour their memories and raise money for the charities that helped”. Last year, the boys raised over £3000 for St Gemma’s Hospice who provided respite and care to Ashley’s dad in his final weeks.
Fundraising for Cancer Research UK this year, a charity dedicated to finding a cure for cancer by funding research, Ryan says “We chose Cancer Research UK, as both myself and Ashley Birks have lost various family members to cancer including our dads”.
Since launching in 1902, Cancer Research UK has made major inroads in their quest to beat cancer, helping double the survival rates of UK sufferers in the last 40 years through research. Today fundraisers are continuing to help Cancer Research UK work towards their goal of finding a cure for cancer, allowing them to fund over 4,000 scientists, doctors and nurses in the UK.
Want to help the boys smash their target?
The boys‘ ride may be over now, but their fundraising in memory of their loved ones is still going strong. After originally setting target over £3000, they are currently on track to raise over £6000 including Gift Aid for Cancer Research UK!
