#charitytuesday: Crisis at Christmas

crisis blog

Crisis at Christmas is a lifeline for thousands of homeless people across the UK, offering support, companionship and vital services over the festive period. 4,594 guests came to Crisis at Christmas 2015 in London, Birmingham, Coventry, Edinburgh and Newcastle combined.

Crisis at Christmas provides immediate help for homeless people at a critical time – sadly, one in four homeless people spends Christmas alone.

Each year hundreds of our amazing volunteers not only selflessly give their time to give a Christmas to homeless people, but also take the opportunity to get sponsored for their shifts and therefore raise money for not only the Christmas appeal but also year-round services. Over the last seven years these volunteers have raised in excess of half a million pounds – a testament to their extraordinary dedication to ending homelessness.

How you can help

  • You can donate £10.00 to help someone towards a brighter new year
  • Donate £22.32 to reserve a place at Crisis at Christmas for someone who wouldn’t otherwise have a Christmas
  • Or donate £223.20 to reserve a whole table at Crisis at Christmas, giving ten people a Christmas

Alternatively, you can set up your own fundraising page to try and raise as much as possible for this fantastic campaign.

This Christmas, Crisis are running a campaign on Virgin Money Giving which will allow them to welcome around 4,300 homeless people to be guests at “Crisis at Christmas” across centres in London, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Birmingham and Coventry. There, the guests will receive three nutritious meals, a new set of clothes, housing and job advice plus access to year-round services. With this campaign, Crisis hopes to help people leave homelessness behind for good.

Over the past six years, many Christmas volunteers have not only given up their time but also raised over half a million pounds in sponsorship for Crisis nationally, making a huge additional impact with over 600 volunteers taking part last Christmas to raise more than £174,000.

This Christmas, Crisis are asking you to become a sponsored volunteer. Just £22.29 is enough to provide a place for a homeless person at Crisis at Christmas and your sponsorship will help Crisis continue to deliver valuable services for homeless people all year round. Any and all sponsorship raised will make a real difference.22944020124_590c64d64a_z

Make Your Mark – the final winner

MYMv2A huge congratulations to Tricia Bath from Maidstone – our final winner of the Make Your Mark competition held in 2012.

Tricia was fundraising for Homeless Charity Crisis, setting up a Virgin Money Giving page but also volunteering her time during Christmas.

Crisis at Christmas is really popular. I didn’t register my interest quick enough in 2011, so last year I was determined and registered in November.”

Tricia was stationed at The Hub, a Crisis distribution centre in Bermondsey, south east London.

She spent the day distributing items to Crisis Skylight centres all over London as one of 33 volunteer drivers.

“I drove everything from small cars to large refrigeration vehicles.

“We were transporting all sorts – food, donated clothing, even massage tables people had loaned out for the cause so the charity clients could get a treatment if they wanted.

“The scheme is brilliant because over five days it gives the clients a thorough health check and access to a few luxuries, which is the sort of thing we take for granted. All in all it was really satisfying and I would recommend it to anyone. I’m going to register in September this year to make sure I can do it again this Christmas.

“I was absolutely amazed to hear that I’d won the donation from Virgin Money Giving, especially as I hadn’t even realised there was a prize draw happening!

It was Crisis that had suggested I fundraise through Virgin Money Giving, so I’m over the moon, and look forward to volunteering again next Christmas.”

Well done to Tricia – who received a £2,012 donation to her page.
